Coastal Erosion Wreaks Havoc, Retaining Wall Collapses
Visakhapatnam: Cyclone Michaung has raised public concern over the vulnerability of the Visakhapatnam coastline, specifically the RK Beach, as sea erosion wreaked havoc once again, causing significant damage to the area.
The cyclone spared the north coastal Andhra districts from its direct impact but intensified sea activity, resulting in an alarming erosion along the coastline.
The stretch of land from the Children’s Park at RK Beach to the Durgalamma temple was majorly hit. The sea surge induced erosion, leading to a 200-metre collapse of the area. The retaining wall crumbled and substantial ground fissures were the result.
Previous cyclones like Phailin, Hudhud and Jawad have significantly contributed to the erosion dilemma, particularly targeting the Ramakrishna Beach. The aftermath of the cyclones in 2013, 2014 and 2021 has accelerated erosion, causing severe damage to the protective infrastructure and the adjoining roads.
The sea erosion caused by Cyclone Michaung has impacted the Children's Park area. There was partial collapse of the boundary wall and the compromising sections of the concrete floor. These developments have reignited apprehensions regarding the safety of man-made structures situated precariously close to the shoreline.
