Visakhapatnam: There is a great need to raise awareness about diabetes in the public, said Regional Director of the Medical and Health Department, Sudhakar Babu. On Thursday, the district Medical and Health Department celebrated World Health Day with a theme of ‘Beat Diabetes’.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr Sudhakar Babu said that many cases of diabetes can be prevented by some simple measures such healthy diet, active lifestyle and giving up smoking and other bad habits. Diabetes would also take a toll on various parts of the body, including the eyes, kidneys, etc.

District Medical and Health Officer P. Sarojini said many cases of diabetes can be prevented and measures exist to detect and manage the condition, improving the lifespan of people with diabetes. Later, a huge diabetes awareness rally was taken by the medical students of AU, in association with the district Medical and Health department.

Joint Collector-2 D. Venkata Reddy flagged off the rally. The students also checked blood pressure and glucose levels of the people by setting up a medical camp on the Beach Road.

The Department of Yoga and Consciousness of Andhra University also conducted a diabetes camp in the varsity. The officials explained the prevention measures and consequences of diabetes through a power point presentation.

The National Thermal Power Corporation, Simhadri, had organised a medical camp at Sangamam hall on Thursday, on the occasion of World Health Day. The camp was inaugurated by president, Deepika Ladies Club, Manisha Bondriya, in the presence of Group general manager, P.K. Bondriya, and General Manager (O&M), M. Sivarama Krishna.
