Coimbatore: A 50-year-old sick female elephant that got stuck in a slushy pit near Naraseepuram in Coimbatore forest division was successfully bailed out and treated by the forest veterinary doctor.

A Forest department source said that on receiving information from farmers of Narseepuram about an elephant lying in the slush, Poluvampatty ranger Palaniraja and range forest staff along with the veterinary doctor rushed to Sundaravayal near Vaidaegi falls on Sunday evening.

To their shock, they found a female elephant trapped in the slush. The elephant was weak and unable to stand on its own legs. The doctor examined it and administered it with medicines and glucose. The elephant had lost a considerable amount of weight due to a stomach infection and was worm-infested.

The elephant was later lifted with the help of a crane under the supervision of the district forest officer (DFO) Mr. Venkatesh. As it was unable to walk on its own, a team of Anti-poaching (AP) watchers were deployed to monitor its further movement, added the official.
