Heatwave to continue in AP till June 11, respite after June 15: IMD

 Visakhapatnam: Heatwave conditions will continue over many places in Andhra Pradesh till June 11, with temperatures soaring to 43ºC in towns near the coast. However, thunderstorms are also likely in north coastal Andhra Pradesh, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions during the same period, according to a report issued by the IMD on Wednesday.

Some relief can be expected from soaring heat after June 15, as the southwest monsoons will touch the state’s coast.

The IMD’s central office predicted that monsoons would set in over Kerala in 48 hours. Conventional models suggest it would take another week for the same to set in over Rayalaseema.

The IMD report said monsoons have detached from the super cyclone Biparjoy and strong westerly winds have been blowing over the south Arabian Sea.

Cloud cover over areas of the south-east Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep and Kerala coasts is increasing. In such a scenario, the conditions are favourable for the onset of monsoon over Kerala during the next 48 hours, according to IMD, Delhi.

The conditions are also favourable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into more parts of the South Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Maldives and Comorin area. The southwest monsoon is also set to advance to parts Southwest and Central Bay of Bengal, parts of Northeast Bay of Bengal and parts of the northeast during the same period.

Jangamaheswaram registered the highest temperature of 43.1ºC, 4.1ºC higher than the maximum temperature. Tuni recorded 42.2ºC, a rise of 5.1ºC, Kakinada 40.8ºC and Visakhapatnam 40ºC.
