Mangaluru: In a focused effort to ensure the safety of people during heavy rains, minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, district in-charge of Dakshina Kannada, has directed officials to take up precautionary measures on top priority.

During a visit to the district on Friday night Rao convened a meeting with officials led by Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan at the Mangaluru City Corporation. The meeting discussed the implementation of precautionary measures in the wake of widespread rains and floods.

While the intensity of rainfall has reduced in the region, the minister emphasized the need to remain vigilant and prepared for possible landslides.
He directed the authorities to relocate individuals residing in unsafe houses near the hillside to safer places.

He directed the PWD Executive Engineer Yashwanth to inspect the condition of bridges across the district and identify signs of damage or weakness if any.

He said that any negligence in the management of natural disasters would not be tolerated and asked them to gear up to undertake emergency operations with utmost seriousness in the event of a calamity.

Rao advised fishermen against venturing into the sea and also urged district collectors and officials to take appropriate measures, such as declaring holidays for schools and colleges due to heavy rains.

In order to efficiently handle and closely monitor the situation during disasters, the minister emphasized the central role of nodal officers stationed at the taluk level.
