Puducherry runs for Rio Olympics

The 3-km run was meant to spread the love of sport among the public and create awareness of the Rio Olympics.

Puducherry: Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi and Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy flagged off the ‘Run for Rio’ here on Sunday as a means to encourage the Indian contingent at the Olympics.

The 3-km run was meant to spread the love of sport among the public and create awareness of the Rio Olympics. The run started from the Gandhi statue near Beach road with more than 500 schoolchildren  participating.

“There should be sustained initiatives to promote sports among children to keep them fit”, said Ms Bedi while flagging off the marathon organised by Directorate of School Education Mentioning the initiatives started in schools to promote sports, Ms Bedi said there should be regular walkathons on the Beach road every month.

The Chief Minister also welcomed the suggestion saying walkathons would be helpful in keeping people fit.
