Tamil Nadu drafts sports policy to produce Olympic medalists
The goal is to send at least 24 athletes from Tamil Nadu to the next Olympics and win at least two medals, says K. Pandiarajan.
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has drafted a sports policy to produce Olympic medalists in 2020 Tokyo Olympics, according to minister for school education and sports development K. Pandiarajan.
While speaking at the annual sports award function 2015-16 in Anna University on Wednesday, he said, “Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa will soon release the sports policy.”
“The goal is to send at least 24 athletes from Tamil Nadu to the next Olympics and win at least two medals. In Rio Olympics of 118 sportspersons from India, eight from the state have participated,” he said.
“The state government is spending more money on creating various sports facilities. Sailing academy at the cost of Rs 7.5 crore is being set up in Marina beach and the academy will train the athletes in all rowing sports,” he said.
“Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University in Vandalur near Chennai boasts of world class facilities like the velodrome, an arena for track cycling and other facilities for aquatic sports,” he added.
