Plan to divert 4tmc of water from Munner to NSP left canal
Officials have been asked to concentrate on Munner river instead and come up with suggestions on how best to utilise it.
Khammam: After realising that the chances of getting water from Nagarjunasagar reservoir to the Khammam district is rather remote, the state government has changed its strategy to address the water shortage in the district and resolve it permanently.
Officials have been asked to concentrate on Munner river instead and come up with suggestions on how best to utilise it.
As per the estimates, about 10 tmc of water fills the Krishna every year. The government wants to tap at least four tmc from it and divert to the NSP Left canal.
Engineers have already completed a survey on this after examining the possibilities and submitted the report to the government. There is no way of getting water to 2.59 lakh acre ayacut under NSP Left canal.
Meanwhile, the Nagarjunasagar reservoir is expected to fulfill only the drinking water needs of Hyderabad. In case of a spillover, there would be enough only for the NSP first zone in Suryapet and Nalgonda districts. The farmers of Left canal have not been getting water from the canal for the last three years.
One of the suggestions offered initially was that the water from Munner river would be lifted during the monsoon and dropped into the Left canal.
Construction of a massive check dam near Danavaigudem is needed for this. Another suggestion was to make use of Pallegudem motors to lift the water from the check dam to the Left canal. The engineers explained that the water can be diverted to the local tanks apart from Lankasagar and Wyra reservoirs. The government will be using 4 tmc water from Munner for the purpose.
