Vijayawada: Vijayawada marked the Fourth International Clean Air for Blue Skies Day on Thursday with a procession from Benz Circle to Raghavaiah Park in the city.

Those who participated in the function organised on the occasion included Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu, Vijayawada West legislator Vellampalli Srinivas, city mayor Rayana Bhagaylakshmi, VMC commissioner Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar and YSRC Vijayawada East constituency in-charge Devineni Avinash.

Flagging off the procession from Benz Circle, the MLAs asked people to use eco-friendly modes of transport, which will reduce not only carbon emissions and air pollution, but also make people healthier because of the walking involved.

Vishnu explained that 143 countries are observing the day to highlight major environmental issues, such as global warming, air pollution due to deforestation and use of plastics. He pointed out that these are leading to climate change, natural calamities, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and industrial pollution, which are greatly impacting humanity. The Central MLA Vishnu asked people to realise their responsibility and follow pollution control measures.

Vijayawada West legislator Velampalli Srinivasa Rao said the city observing the International Clean Air for Blue Skies Day is an indication of people's awareness about the need to conserve the environment.

Eastern constituency in-charge Avinash and mayor Bhagyalakshmi said everyone should take responsible steps towards protecting the environment for future generations. They said environmental protection is possible by everyone making small changes in their daily habits.

Commissioner Swapnil asked people to avoid plastic products, save energy, cycle for short distances, use public transport and electric vehicles, and avoid use of ACs. He said an action plan will be formulated, so that everyone can participate in creating a pollution-free society.

Deputy mayors Bellam Durga and Avutu Sri Sailaja Reddy, corporators, officials and students in large numbers participated in the procession.
