There were no casualties even though the huge explosion was heard three kilometers away and caused damages to nearby houses.
Thrissur: A house under construction was completely destroyed after gunpowder illegally stored inside it exploded at 3.30 a.m. on Tuesday. There were no casualties even though the huge explosion was heard three kilometers away and caused damages to nearby houses.
The house belongs to Kundannur Aanandan, a former licencee of Thiruvamabady Temple fireworks for Thrissur pooram.
The incident happened at Kumblangad in Wadakkanchery. The house owner later surrendered before the cops. He has been charged with non-bailable sections of Explosives Substance Act and will be produced in the court on Wednesday.
Wadakkanchery SI K.C. Ratheesh said that Aanandan failed to produce any relevant documents for storing the gunpowder. He told police that the chemicals were stored to produce fireworks like palm leaf cracker and 'gundu'. Palm leaves and the thick paper cover used for 'gundu' was found at the site of the explosion.
Meanwhile, Heritage Animal Task Force general secretary V.K. Venkitachalam has filed a complaint with DGP and Disaster Management Wing demanding an inquiry into the connection between Aanandan and the present licensee of Thiruvamabady Temple and the source of illegal gunpowder stored inside the house by putting the life of several persons in the locality at stake.
