Berhampore: Nine newborns died in the last 48 hours at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, prompting the authorities to start a probe.

Among the deceased, three were admitted in the pediatric intensive critical care unit while six others were in the special neonatal critical care unit of the state government-run hospital.

All of them were aged between two days and four months. Meanwhile a 10-year-old boy died due to pneumonia and acute cardiac disorder at the same hospital.

On Friday, the hospital principal Amit Dawn informed that a three-member inquiry committee has been formed and it would submit a report to the state health department.

He said, "These newborns were malnourished and weighed around 350-450 gms in contrast to the average requirement of 1200-1500 gms. Moreover, they were referred from other hospitals within 3-4 hours after their delivery. This wasted the time of treatment
