Chennai: An open air theatre will be a major attraction at a park in Pallavaram, which is awaiting inauguration.

In an initiative that will usher in opportunities for artistes in suburbs, the St Thomas Mount–Pallavaram Cantonment Board has allotted space for an open air theatre, besides setting up comprehensive facilities including a gym, senior citizens bay, badminton court and skating rink.

The project on Sandhai Road was among the much-awaited projects in Pallavaram, as there are no other parks in the vicinity.

Cantonment CEO Ajit Reddy told DC that the facility would be inaugurated by the end of the month. “The entire idea of setting up a theatre is to encourage local talents in arts and culture. While artiste can exhibit their talents, it would be an entertainment for visitors,” the CEO said.

“The one-and-year-project  has been constructed at the approximate budget of Rs 1 crore. A gym is also on the pipeline,” he stated. The road, which once had the famous ‘Pallavaram sandai’ before being shifted to Old Trunk Road, has turned out to be an infamous spot for anti-social activities. “It is necessary to deploy enough security, to prevent nuisance at the facility,” said Vinodhini C, a motorist.
