ALAPPUZHA: Beema Umma, a disabled mother of three challenged girl children Noorjahan, Habiba and Raseena, stood helplessly outside of SDV centenary hall as collector Veena N. Madhavan was busy receiving applications during Sevana Sparsham at 9 am on Saturday. They were sceptical how she would respond, for the family had neither ration card nor Aadhaar. They were not even sure they could meet her. One of her children was visually impaired while another had over fifty percent disability.
Wheelchair-bound Umma and her children sought the help of many to get into the district collector’s grievance redressal initiative. Seeing their struggle, the collector walked out of the venue and reached them. Though they wanted help for Aadhaar registration, collector understood that they were not getting any government benefits as they have no ration card. She helped them to get their Aadhaar registration immediately and asked the supply officer to initiate steps for ration card. This was one of the 1603 complaints she received on Saturday from Ambalappuzha taluk, out of which 711 settled.
Some 50 applications for relief from chief minister’s relief fund were accepted and settled 15 survey -related issues. Most of them were for medical aid and land. The update on the unsettled cases will be available on the website http://www.ssdcalp.in/sevanasparsham. Students under National Service Scheme had opened a counter at the venue to give applications filled free. Kuttanad taluk programme is on Monday at Rice Research Institute campus Mankombu. Additional district magistrate M.K. Kabeer and RDO Muralidharan Pillai were among those attended.
