Gold is trading at Rs 29,050 per 10 grams, tracking a sluggish trend overseas amid easing demand from local jewellers.

Thrissur: The large quantity of gold worn by the daughter of Nattikka MLA Geetha Gopi was gifted to her by her relatives. The MLA and her  husband gave her only 50 sovereigns. This is as per the explanation  given by Ms Geetha Gopi to her party on the lavish wedding conducted at   Guruvayur recently. The MLA gave her reply in writing to CPI district secretary K.K. Valsaraj on Wednesday night.  He told DC that the contents of the letter  could not be revealed.  The explanation would be discussed by the district executive meeting of the party and an appropriate action would be taken.

“Except for the gold worn by the MLA’s daughter, it was a normal wedding,”  Mr Valsaraj said. Meanwhile, the party’s lone Lok Sabha MP C.N. Jayadevan defended the MLA on Thursday saying that the era of Communist party members living on ‘paripuvada,’  black tea and beedi had  ended.   “If they get good food, they would take it,” he said.

YC demands probe
Mr Balu Canal, general secretary of Youth Congress  Thrissur Parliament Constituency,  has filed a complaint with the assistant Income Tax commissioner here demanding a probe into the source of money for the wedding. “The affidavit filed by the MLA shows that she and her husband do not have the income  to gift 300 sovereigns of gold to her daughter  and to conduct a two-day reception for several thousands of guests.   Besides,  as per the new central law, keeping in possession more than 64 sovereigns is an offence and hence an inquiry need to be conducted into the matter,” he said in the complaint.
