HYDERABAD: One of the two 12-year-old kids who were trapped for one and a half hours after a portion of a boundary wall collapsed on them in Reddy Basti, Champapet on Wednesday, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment in NIMS in the early hours of Thursday.

Doctors said Neredimelli Raj Kumar suffered internal injuries after the wall fell on him and his friend Madhu Reddy. The incident occurred when they tried to remove a cricket ball from the terrace, at about 5.10 pm.

They were buried under 300 kg of concrete, and the operation to rescue them took one and a half hours, Saroornagar police said. The building was constructed in 1983.

Rescuers had no access to the place where the children were stranded, and had to bring in a JCB to break the gate, M. Srinivas Reddy district fire officer (DFO) said. Raj Kumar and Madhu Reddy were rescued by 6.30 and rushed to a private hospital.

After examining them, the doctors told their parents the children had suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries and them referred to the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences.

Raj Kumar had completed his Class 7 from Nalanda Vidyaniketan and was the younger son of Mary and Neredimelli Prasad; their elder son is a Class 9 student in the same school. The family had come to the city from East Godavari district 15 years ago.

Prasad works as a private electrician and his wife as a caretaker. “Raju was a very bright and active kid, and interested in playing cricket,” Mary said.
