Kozhikode: The heritage walk initiative in the city will get a formal structure soon to package it as a tourist attraction. This will be done by six students of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode, as a  social development project. They have joined Capt. Ramesh Babu, project director, NIRDESH, and also the brain behind  the heritage walk, to popularise it through various means, including social media and using the latest technologies. “The project started in June with identifying different heritage trails in the city and locating heritage structures along the trails,”  said Arup Kumar Das, one of the students.

The sites  identified so far include Harbour Trail (with heritage structures like the lighthouse, ruined piers, Canoly’s Park and Mother of God Cathedral), Trade Trail (stretching from the beach through Valiyangadi, Gujarati Street, Halwa Bazar and Nagaramupto Railway Station), Temple Trail (around Tali and Chalappuram), Thekkeppuram Trail (with heritage structures like Miskal Mosque, Muccunthi Mosque, Kuttichira Tank and Traditional Tharavads) and the Royal Trail around Palayam and Mananchira.

The team is now undertaking walks on these trails and surveying the history and literature to list out the details. These will be catalogued  and made available to people interested in conducting heritage walks for tourists and history buffs along different trails. The team will also prepare route maps and take photographs of structures to aid future heritage walkers.
