Mayor V K Prasanth throws open modern fish market

Around 80 fish and close to 50 vegetable vendors depend on the market.

Thiruvananthapuram: The refurbished fish market at Kazhakkoottam became operational on Monday. The city corporation implemented its modernisation with the financial assistance of Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation Limited. The new market has various modern facilities, including an effluent treatment plant, according to a press statement mayor V. K. Prasanth issued.

Inaugurating it, he said that a shed would be built on the market compound to address the problem of space restraints. He said the corporation would take necessary measures to set up amenities like washrooms and air conditioning here. It now has basic facilities like water supply and electric connection. The PWD drainage has also been renovated.

Around 80 fish and close to 50 vegetable vendors depend on the market. Based on decisions with the vendors here, a Market Development Committee has been formed to ensure the proper functioning of the market. Deputy mayor Rakhi Ravikumar presided over. Corporation secretary M, Nizaruddin, KSCADC chief engineer M. Rajeev, welfare committee chairperson Geetha Gopal, town planning committee chairperson R. Satheeshkumar and revenue committee chairperson Simi Jyothish spoke. Councillors Girikumar, Sindhu Sasi, Bindu, Sivadutt and Lathakumari were present.
