Kozhikode: The Prime Minister’s Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) scheme for giving pregnant women better healthcare will kickstart in the district on November 9 at four hospitals; Taluk hospital Nadapuram, community health centre at Thiruvallur and primary health centres at Valayam and Kodenchery. The programme aims at enhancing the entire healthcare system for pregnant women. Free check-up should be conducted at these four hospitals on the ninth of every month.

“Women who are three to six months pregnant are covered under the scheme. Facilities such as ultra sound scanning, lab tests, group counselling on breastfeeding, sleeping time, diet, delivery at hospitals, family planning etc would be given,” said District Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) officer Dr Sarala Nair.

A vehicle would be arranged for women who live in remote areas.  A team consisting of public health nurses, ASHA workers and health workers would identify the beneficiaries and give them Mother and Child protection card (MCP). Physicians in the private sector can also become part of the centrally- funded programme by registering on http://pmsma.nhp.gov.in/. Doctors’ bodies such as the Kerala Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Indian Medical Association district chapter assured that they would join hands with the programme. Wayanad MP, M.I Shanavas will inaugurate the project at Kodenchery PHC on November 9.
