Suspect held for murder of woman on beach off East Coast Road
The deceased woman was identified as Muneera, a 26-year-old widow, working as a housekeeping staff at a hospital in Royapettah.
Chennai: Ten days after a Chennai woman was found murdered and her body half buried on a beach near Alamarakottai off East Coast Road (ECR), Kancheepuram police has arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the murder on Tuesday.
On December 29 (Friday), fishermen from Alamarakottai village went to dry their fishing nets on the beach when they noticed the woman’s body half buried in the sands. The deceased woman was identified as Muneera, a 26-year-old widow, working as a housekeeping staff at a hospital in Royapettah.
At the time of the recovery of her body, there were blood injuries around her mouth and an injury on the back of her head. A handbag recovered a few meters away from where her body was found contained a diary.
Meanwhile, a special team of Kancheepuram police investigated her colleagues at the hospital and relatives and zeroed in on a suspect. John alias Maduraivel (35) who also works as a housekeeping staff at the same hospital hadn’t reported to work from December 27 until December 30.
“Muneera too left home on December 27 and was found dead on the beach two days later,” an investigating official said. When police descended onto John’s residence in Egmore, he initially claimed innocence.
But, his cellphone tower location was in and around Alamarakottai for the three days he did not report to work. “When pressed on this, he confessed to the murder,” the official added. Further investigations are on to ascertain if John had sought the help of any other person to murder the woman.
