KOTTAYAM: In a setback to the investigation into the killing of migrant worker Kailas Jyothi Behra, the police could not find a witness. The legs and hands of the job seeker from Assam were tied up and was beaten to death on the roadside at Chiravumuttam near Chingavanam near here.

Most of the suspects are residents and their neighbours are unwilling to say anything against them. “They are not prepared to appear as witnesses in the case since those involved belong to the nearby places,” circle inspector Zacharia Mathew told DC.

The victim was attacked at least in three different locations. The police on Friday had arrested Varghese, accused of tying up his hands and legs before attacking after he allegedly entered the house of his sister showing alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Some chased him away mistaking to be a thief after he went to two nearby houses.

Doctors who conducted the post-mortem said the cause of death was due to the shock of the hit with a blunt object on his head, adding to his weak physical condition showing withdrawal symptoms. “The victim suffered a cerebral haemorrhage. The shock may also be due to the chase in a strange place,” sources at the forensic department of the Kottayam MCH told DC.
