Vijayawada: National Commission for Women (NCW) joint secretary A. Asholi Chalai wants police officers and parents to be sensitive about the rights of Indian women in matrimony with NRIs.

Speaking on “Rights of Women in NRI Matrimonial Issues” at a function organised by AP CID police in collaboration with NCW at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur on Tuesday, Asholi underlined that there are constraints and challenges in dealing with issues like impounding of passport, extradition, custody of children, and redressal in abandonment of children and wife.

The NCW joint secretary called upon Mahila police working at village / ward secretariats to make women aware about these issues related to NRI marriages.

AP Women’s Commission chairperson Vasireddy Padma advised parents to be careful before giving their daughters in marriage to NRIs. She asked police and legal authorities to extend help to affected women.

APNRT Society president M. Venkat explained details of assistance AP government provides in such matters.

Deputy SPs, inspectors of police and Mahila police attended the programme.
