BELAGAVI: As it is clear that DySP Kallappa Handibag committed suicide for his involvement in a kidnap for ransom, the CID teams have speeded up investigation to ascertain where the ransom amount of Rs 10 lakh, which was demanded from the kidnap victim, Tejas Kumar, was handed over.

After DIG of CID Sonia Narang interrogated family members of the DySP and his wife at Murgod, another team of CID officials visited his hometown Handigund, near Raibag.

Sources did confirm that the officer was worried over his involvement in the case days before his death, but said the CID officials are still gathering information about other possible reasons that could have forced him to take the extreme step.

At Handigund, a team of CID officials, headed by SP Yada Martin, met relatives of Kallappa including parents and friends and tried to obtain details regarding his financial dealings.

He said a report on the entire investigation would be submitted shortly to the government. Most relatives of Kallappa were present at Handigund when the CID team met them. Earlier Ms Narang spoke to in-laws of Kallappa at Murgod, where he committed suicide and inspected the spot where the incident took place.

She said that two teams have been formed to investigate the case and officials were visiting both Chikmagaluru and Murgod for the past some days to gather details.

According to sources three of Kallappa's friends were interrogated by CID officials in a private hotel near Raibag to know more about Kallappa's connections. Kallappa was said to be closely associated with the trio and prepared for his competitive examinations in the past with them before joining the police force. Two of his friends who were interrogated are working as police constables.

Some of his relatives have admitted before CID officials that Kallappa was panicky when the news of his involvement in kidnap for ransom came to light.
Sources said the police are yet to confirm about whether Kallappa received the alleged ransom or anybody else. Late on Saturday, former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy visited Murgod and Handigund to meet the family of Kallappa as a goodwill gesture and several JD(S) leaders were present.
