Chennai: Widespread rain in the city on Tuesday came as a respite to Chennaiites who have been suffering oppressive weather for the past one week.

Weathermen say the trend of high temperature and evening rain will continue for the next few days.

S.B. Thambi, deputy director-general, Regional Meteorological Centre, said the pattern is common for the season. “The phenomenon can be noticed for the next three days in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” he told DC.

Attributing the rainfall activity to convection, weather blogger, Pradeep John said the strong sea breeze triggered convective rain from the coast towards inland.

“For the past one week, temperature is three to four degrees above normal. Days are predicted to be humid; but the spells in the evening will make up for it,” Pradeep added.

With 37.8 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, Chennai departed 3.7 degrees from August’s normal temperature. Meenambakkam had a similar situation as it recorded 37.5 degrees Celsius, which is 3.2 degrees above the normal.

Meanwhile, the unexpected rain not only caught people by surprise, but also caused congestion on arterial city roads,  including GST Road, Anna Salai, Medavakkam Main Road and EVR Periyar Salai. Chennai received 9 mm of rainfall on Tuesday.
