Thrissur: The Youth Congressmen conducted a symbolic hanging of Govindachami, the death row convict in the Soumya rape and murder case, here on Friday.  They  alleged that the senior standing counsel had joined hands with the defence lawyer and did not present the prosecution case effectively before the division bench of Supreme Court on Thursday.

The court had expressed doubts over the evidence  presented by the prosecution to prove the  charge that  the convict had pushed the victim from the slow-moving train. The court told standing counsel Thomas P. Joseph of the state  government  not to present assumptions before the court. YC leader and deputy leader of opposition in Thrissur corporation John Daniel said that the standing counsel had committed  gross dereliction of duty by not effectively presenting the evidence against the convict and asked the state government to conduct an inquiry into his  alleged lapses.

Soumya, travelling in a ladies coach on the Ernakulam-Shoranur passenger train on February 1, 2011 was attacked and pushed off the  train by the convict near Shornur.  He  later raped her  and inflicted fatal injuries on her,  as a result of which she  died in hospital on February 6.
