KOZHIKODE: Kozhikode Corporation will rein in scrapyard owners defying its order to remove scrap waste from public places and scientifically dispose of it. The corporation is planning to put railings on either side of Lorry Stand Road where many scrap yards are functioning and dumping waste on roadsides. The civic body is also suffering revenue losses due to the indiscriminate dumping of waste on the road leading to the lorry park.

Recently on a direction from its Finance Standing Committee, the health officials conducted raids and seized scrap metals, vehicle parts and motors after they ignored repeated warnings against encroaching and dumping trash on roads. The committee will decide on further actions now.

Though the yard owners have requested to return the seized materials, the civic authorities are planning to take the issue seriously and to fine them heavily. “We are planning to renovate the Lorry Stand and put railings on the road so that the scrap dealers will not dump the waste. This path is a relief when Valiyangadi faces traffic congestion,” deputy mayor Meera Darsak told DC.
