US citizen hurt near Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram critical

The condition of Mario Sapota, 37, who is said to be mentally unbalanced, remains critical, say doctors.

Kollam: A US citizen, a resident of Amritanandamayi Math here, was admitted to Thiruvananthapuram MCH with injuries suffered allegedly in a fight with the locals on Saturday. The condition of Mario Sapota, 37, who is said to be mentally unbalanced,  remains critical, say doctors. Mario Sapota, brought in an ambulance from the Math, was admitted to the intensive care unit in the MCH by around 12.50 a.m. on Saturday. The doctors found injuries on his head and  all over his body in the preliminary check-up. He was referred to the intensive care unit and is being treated by  doctors from medicine, surgery, neuro-surgery and psychiatry departments.    

According to Karunagappally police, the American national was injured in an apparent bout with the local residents behind the Math at Vallikkavu. The police suspect the man was mentally unstable and  attacked the public which led to the bout.The police informed collector Dr. S. Karthikeyan who was present at the Math in connection with the  President’s visit. Based on his direction, a doctor from Karunagappally taluk hospital gave sedatives to Mario Sapota after which he was taken to the Thiruvananthapuram MCH.
