KOZHIKODE: The city corporation  will launch the first animal birth control (ABC) centre and multi- specialty veterinary hospital at Poolakkadavu near here  in the first week of January. The centre meant to control the  stray dog menace in the city was delayed for years following the protest raised by the residents of Poolakkadavu.   It will provide 24-hour consultancy and also handle  all the veterinary emergencies.

Veterinary officer K.K. Baby,  in-charge of the  ABC project,  said that all works have been  completed, including setting up cages for the dogs and other animals  to be  brought here. Dog catchers  trained by the corporation and over five  surgeons have been appointed. The corporation will undertake activities like  survey, surgeries and vaccination of dogs under the project.  “Once the centre starts its operations in full swing, we will be able to conduct more than 200 surgeries every month,” he said.

The corporation will conduct a  meeting with the residents of Poolakkadavu, people’s representatives and officials of the corporation to clear  the apprehensions of the public about the centre.  The people will be briefed about the systems to be implemented in the centre like incinerator to burn biological waste after sterilisation and other waste management methods which are the major concerns raised by the public.
