SALEM: Close on the heels of a shutter giving away at the KRP dam in Krishnagiri district, leading to a huge discharge of water in the South Pennar river, two shutters of a barrage across the Cauvery river near Edappadi in Salem district were damaged on Saturday, hitting electricity generation at Poolampatti Piruvu check dam.

Sources said that water began to gush out on Saturday morning as two shutters on the Cauvery barrage had developed a leak.

About ten-ft of water stored in the check dam drained out, following the damage.
While electricity generation is being done in a small scale at various check dams along the Cauvery river, the one at Poolampatti Pirivu not only supports hydro-electricity production, but also facilitates boat service between Poolampatti and Nerinjipettai.

Following the damage to the shutters, the boating service was also stopped. Public Works Department (PWD) officials rushed to the spot and have begun to repair repairing the damaged shutters.
