Kozhikode: Cycle tracks still a dream
State urged to take necessary steps.
KOZHIKODE: Will city pedalers get exclusive cycle tracks? Many leading lights of the cycling clubs in the city urged the state government to take steps to make their dream come true. A delegation from the pedalers’ clubs in the city had recently met MLAs and ministers and raised the issue. There have been promises from varied administrative bodies and key personalities like A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, and M.K. Muneer, MLA, to set up cycle tracks in the city.
Calicut Pedalers’ Club secretary Prasanjith PK told DC that for budding pedalers, cycle tracks were essential in the city. “We should develop such a culture among city dwellers in order to ensure a green environment as well as good health for the upcoming generation”, he added. There was also a promise to set a cycle tracks on the Ramanattukara- Vengalam bypass which also still remains as a dream.
All Kerala Bicycle Promotion Council (AKBPC) chairman CE Chakkunni told DC that the government and local administrative bodies should do whatever they could to promote cycling. “Only then more and more children would turn to cycling which would ensure better health for the next generation”, he added. “The governments in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are promoting cycling by giving cycles to students whereas here we even ban cycling in school premises”, he pointed out.
