Hyderabad High Court stops use of jumbos at fests
The Nizam Trust had acquired a trained female elephant and handed it over to the Zoo.
Hyderabad: The High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition for usage of elephants during religion processions such as Bibi ka Alam and Bonalu. Even the Nizam Trust, which had donated the elephant ‘Rajani’ to the Nehru Zoo Park, may not be able to avail the elephant for the Moharam procession.
The Nehru Zoological Park usually provides a trained elephant for religious processions, particularly on the occasions of Moharam and Bonalu. It also provided the elephant to the Hazrath Ghouse-e-Azam Welfare Society for the procession of Giarhveen Shareef of Hazrath Ghouse-e-Azam. However, it stopped providing the elephant to the latter organization after 2017. Aggrieved by the alleged discrimination, Mr Moosa Khan, who is president of the society, approached the HC.
The Nizam Trust had acquired a trained female elephant and handed it over to the Zoo. This pachyderm is being provided for use on Moharam and Bonalu processions.
