Thiruvananthapuram: An ‘Elanji’ sapling was planted on the premises of VJT Hall by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Manav Ekta Mission founder Sri M, as part of launching ‘My Tree’ initiative. The chief guests left the venue without speeches exhorting others to protect the environment.

The Mission’s member C T Varghese said, “We have been doing various activities with serious emphasis on environmental protection. ‘My Tree’ was launched in connection with this.”

The ‘Elanji’, according to him, makes a good avenue tree. “It will have a big canopy and does not shed its leaves. It is non-deciduous,” he says. When it grows into a tree, it will start flowering. “Those look like dried flowers, unlike the ones with brilliant colours. However the smell is really intoxicating,” says the retired Zoology professor. This ‘Elanji’ was planted in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi.
