Lightning Kills 4 Persons, Including 3 Women in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: Four persons, including three women, on Monday died in two separate incidents of lightning strikes in Odisha’s Angul and Koraput districts.

As per reports, two women identified as Sushama Behera and Penny Behera from Angul’s Balaramprasad were out to collect wood near the ash pond of National Aluminium Company’s smelter unit when lightning struck.

The duo died on the spot.

Two others, Ajay Behera and Kuanri Behera were also injured in the incident.

In another incident of lightning strike, a woman and her son lost their lives at Borigumma in Koraput. The deceased were identified as Durubati Halba and her son Deepak Halba.

As per reports, Durubati, along with her husband Lingaraj Halba and son were working in a paddy field when a thunderstorm started. While Lingaraj moved to a safer place, both Durubati and Deepak took shelter under a tree. Lightning struck and the mother-son duo collapsed on the ground.

They were immediately rushed to Borigumma hospital for treatment but the doctors pronounced them ‘received dead.’

“We had gone to the field to water the crop when there was a lightning strike with a loud sound. I was at the front and when I looked back, both my wife and son collapsed on the ground,” said Lingaraj.
