Chennai: Missing man's body exhumed

Chennai: A 38-year-old man who was deemed missing a week ago was murdered and his body buried inside a hut in Avadi, police found on Saturday. A woman with whom he was in a relationship with and another woman were arrested by the police.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, the deceased man's body was exhumed in the presence of revenue officials and moved to the Kilpauk Medical college hospital.

The deceased, Sundaram was a flower vendor and a resident of the Ramalingapuram 3rd street in Avadi. His mother approached the local police on September 2 after he failed to return home. According to his mother, he left home after he received a phone call only to never return.

Meanwhile, preliminary investigations revealed that Sundaram was in a relationship with Amudha (33) - a widow, residing at Gowripet. While initially, Amudha claimed innocence about the disappearance of Sundaram, she broke down and confessed to having murdered him over the course of investigations, police sources said.

Sundaram is said to have physically abused the woman after getting drunk and the woman started to cut ties with him. In the meantime, she also became close to her neighbour, Diwan Mohammed, an auto driver. Amudha and Diwan plotted to murder Sundaram and invited him to the latter's house through Amudha's sister-in-law, Rajeshwari.

"In the hut, they murdered him by stabbing him with a kitchen knife and smashing his head with a hammer," a police officer said. Later, they buried him in the house itself. On Saturday, Avadi police arrested Amudha and her sister-in-law Rajeshwari. The hunt is on for Diwan Mohammed and his friend, Gopi who was also an accomplice, police sources said.
