Chennai: Why not build a symbiotic relationship with the fauna during the harvest festival? While the question of performing jallikattu remains uncertain, here is some good news for animal lovers. Spare some time in Pongal Bird Counting through an annual event initiated by the group of like-minded people, to document bird life across TN.
Co-ordinated by Tamil Birders Network and Bird Count India, Pongal Bird Count (PBC) would help in documenting various types of birds and making an entry in a specified site.
“The event is part of a worldwide effort to document birds around the globe and to make bird watching popular and scientific. The result of the count will be uploaded into ebird.org, an online platform for bird watchers to register their observations in a systematic manner,” said P. Jeganathan, a bird watcher.
Calling in for a wider participation, Jeganathan said, “Most number of checklists is submitted from districts such as Thoothukudi, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Coimbatore and Pondicherry. Participation from Vellore, Ariyalur, Karur and Nagapattinam will be appreciated.” For more details about the event, participants can visit http://www.birdcount.in/events/pongal-bird.
