Officials Bracing for Power Hungry Greater Hyderabad this Summer
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad region is expected to consume more electricity this year compared to 2023, amidst rapidly changing lifestyles and consumer behaviour towards power consumption, the southern discom said on Friday.
The power supply utility said that when the summer heat peaks in May, it expects households to soak in as much as 4,000 megawatts (MW), up from 3,756 MW for the same month in 2023.
Expected to contribute to the peak summer power demand is the large growth in the number of domestic consumers in Rajendranagar, Habsiguda, Cybercity, Saroornagar, and Medchal circles of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited, the utility officials said.
Normally, the year on year overall growth for the discom ranges between three and five. In these circles, the growth of power demand is being witnessed at the rate of 12 to and 15 per cent, the officials said.
According to TSSPDCL chairman and managing director Musharaff Farooqui, the overall peak demand for power in May is expected to at stay around the last year’s figure of 9,860 MW in southern Telangana. The overall peak demand for the state last year was 15,497 MW.
Farooqui instructed officials to carry out timely checks of the distribution system and gear up for the coming summer. He said that when repairs are required to feeders or transformers, the staff must ensure that they get the job done in not more than two hours.
Farooqui also said energy audits must be conducted and it must be ensured that billing matches the power supplied.

Projections show that the Greater Hyderabad region will have a record-breaking power demand in the summer.
