Inheritance rules the roost in Malappuram
The LDF has managed the dissidents, and the independent candidates it backs, P.V. Anwar, poses a real threat.
Malappuram: UDF in Malappuram has two first-time candidates claiming the inheritance of their fathers’ politics - Aryadan Shoukath and Abid Husain Thangal.
In Nilambur, the candidature of Aryadan Shoukath, son of power minister Aryadan Muhammed, was almost sure as his father was planning to retire from electoral politics. But unlike his father, Mr Shoukath might not have an easy walkover. The LDF has managed the dissidents, and the independent candidates it backs, P.V. Anwar, poses a real threat.
But for Abid Husain Thangal, son of former IUML MLA K.K.S Thangal and head of the sociology department at Farook College, has no visible threats in Kottakkal, a party bastion.
In Ponnani P.T. Ajaya Mohan, son of former legislator P.T. Mohankrishnan and KPCC secretary, is taking on sitting MLA and LDF candidate P. Sreeramakrishnan for the second time. There are already two sitting UDF MLAs who are sons of two late IUML stalwarts.
Education minister P.K. Abdu Rabb, son of former deputy chief minister K. Avukadarkutty Naha, is pitted against LDF’s civic polls hero Niyas Pulikkalakat in Tirurangadi. P.K. Basheer, son of former MLA P. Seethi Haji, is seeking re-election from his home turf of Eranad.
