Chennai: From reaching out to underprivileged children to conducting technologically innovative programmes, members of APJ international organisation have planned a slew of initiatives to commemorate the first death anniversary of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam which falls on July 27.
A.P.J. Sheik Saleem, grandson of Kalam, said the memorial of the former President would take shape once the Central government approves the three-acre site at Rameswaram.
“The state government has sanctioned two acres. Talks are on with the Centre to approve three more acres,” said Sheik Saleem. He also requested the public to not trust other unauthorised foundations started in Kalam’s name.
The not-for-benefit organisation inaugurated last year is working towards achieving Kalam’s mission. Addressing the media, Anusha Ravi, CEO of Park Institutions, said over a lakh trees would be planted on the day. “Every Indian should plant a tree to strengthen Kalam’s dream of environment-friendly world,” she said.
“To kindle creativity among students, a competition ‘Young Scientists India’ will be conducted on July 18 at Russian Cultural Centre. A similar initiative ‘Make for India’ calls for technological makings in energy efficiency and agricultural advancement,” director of Space Kids India, Shrimathi Kesan, said.
Hundred portraits of Kalam with sand and pumpkins will be made on Rameswaram beach, a task that would take 36 hours. Members of the foundation will also take out a nationwide rally to promote ‘Clean India’.
