Thrissur: It was the British who institutionalised charity in India where service is part of life, national general secretary of RSS Bhaiyyaji Joshi has said. He was speaking at a state-level meeting of Seva Bharathi, the service wing of RSS, in Guruvayur on Saturday. “Rather than saying ‘extend help to people’, the appropriate usage will be to ‘extend your service’. There is no point in creating beneficiaries for different schemes. The goal should be to bring down the number of beneficiaries by providing regular service to the weaker sections of the society,” he said.

He added focus needs to be more on the tribal communities that constitutes nearly nine per cent of the country’s population. “These tribal people who are living without having an inch of land as their own for several generations need to be brought to the mainstream,” Mr Joshi said. Director Priyadarshan was present at inaugural function of the two-day event of the Seva Bharathi in which matters related to environment and Swachh Bharat will be  discussed.
