Rameswaram: The Rameswaram special branch police seized about two kg of 'Cannabis (a drug obtained from the hemp plant) and have arrested six persons in that connection. The seized drug has been handed over to the Mandapam police for further action.
Following an intelligence tip-off to the SP, special branch, a team of police officials, in coordination with the special branch SI, Lakshmanan, nabbed six persons after a raid at a premises in the Mandapam area on Saturday. They seized two kg of 'Cannabis' in their possession and handed over the seizure to the Mandapam police.
Police gave the names of the arrested persons as Rameswaram-based Balasubramaniyan and Ilavarasan, Danushkodi-based Ponnandi, Mandapam-based Jagatheswaran, besides two Forest department temporary employees Mugesh and Ramakrishnan.
FISHERS CALL OF STIR
Meanwhile, in another development in the pilgrim-island, Rameswaram fishermen who had commenced an indefinite stir on Thursday to protest against the non-release of assistance from the 'National Fishermen's Welfare Savings and Relief Fund' to 450 mechanized boat owners of Rameswaram, have called off their agitation.
This followed an assurance of positive action from the State Information Technology minister, S. Manikandan, after talks with the Rameswaram fishermen here. The fishermen have decided to go sailing from Monday, according to N J Bose, state secretary of the Tamil Nadu Mechanised Boat Fishermen Welfare Association.
