Mapping Bengaluru's very own Guggenheim
The ground-breaking ceremony was held on Monday afternoon to celebrate the start of the construction.
Bengaluru: Bengaluru, known for its rich, diverse cultural heritage and for juxtaposing history with the contemporary, deserves its own Guggenheim. And now, that dream is on its way to realisation. The Musueum of Art and Photography, an ambitious, 44,000 sq foot art project, is officially on its way, a milestone in a journey fraught with challenges. The ground-breaking ceremony was held on Monday afternoon to celebrate the start of the construction.The flagship building, which is located on Kasturba Road, a stone's throw from Cubbon Park, will open its doors to the public in 2020.
The museum will house and manage a large, important collection that has been divided into six key departments and includes over 15,000 objects ranging from art, textiles, photography, craft and design artefacts from the 12th century to the present day.
The project is managed by the Art & Photography Foundation, a non-profit organisation. It has been made possible through the support of the Tata Trusts, Citi, Sasken and Manipal Foundation, local and national philanthropists, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and Puneet and Avantika Dalmi, the founding patrons.
MAP aims at being India's leading privately funded art institution, focussing on exhibition, education and conservation of India's cultural heritage. The mission is to increase access to art anc culture through education community and outreach programmes.
