Kerala Police still in dark over jawan's whereabouts
The BSF officials were in Kozhikode in connection with election duties and to monitor highly sensitive booths.
KOZHIKODE: A month after the Border Security Force (BSF) inspector who came for election duties in sensitive booths in the district was shot dead by a BSF jawan, the police is still clueless about the whereabouts of the jawan, even after sending a team of officials to his homeland in Bihar. It was on the night of May 12 that Umesh Pal Yadav from Runisaidpur, Muzaffarpur district in Bihar, allegedly shot dead inspector Ram Gopal Meena, from Rajasthan, in Payyoli.
The BSF officials were in Kozhikode in connection with election duties and to monitor highly sensitive booths. Mr Yadav allegedly shot six rounds at Mr Meena after the duo had a verbal fight over granting leave for the former. It was also reported that Mr Yadav was working without leave for nearly 45 days.
Vadakara DySP Prajeesh Thottathil, who is in charge of the investigation, said that the team could not make a breakthrough though they had visited Mr Yadav’s homeland in Runisaidpur. “Since Mr Yadav does not even use a mobile phone, it has been difficult to track him through telephone networks. During our search in his native place, his relatives made it clear that he had not visited there ever since the shooting took place. More details regarding the investigation cannot be made public at this juncture,” said the DySP.
After the firing, the alleged accused is believed to have jumped the wall of the camp at Islamic English Higher Secondary School, Iringal, and left his gun and pouch there. Mr Meena was injured in his thighs, back and behind the head.
Though he was taken to Cooperative hospital in Vadakara, his life could not be saved. The injury to the skull was reported to be the cause of death. Though a body was found near Vellayil beach, days after the shooting, BSF officials found that it did not match with the identification marks on Mr Yadav.
