Bid to take up Kochi Cancer Research Centre with PM Narendra Modi
The demand gaining momentum is to turn KCRC into the national cancer institute that is proposed by the Centre in South India.
Kochi: Pressure is mounting on the state government and people’s representatives from Kochi to take up the cause of Kochi Cancer Research Centre (KCRC) with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he visits Kochi for the inauguration of Kochi Metro Rail. It is learnt that Member of Parliament Prof K V Thomas has agreed to take up the issue while others are yet to join the wagon. The demand gaining momentum is to turn KCRC into the national cancer institute that is proposed by the Centre in South India.
“The number of cancer cases in the state is increasing day after day and bringing succour to the affected by way of providing quality treatment is one way to mitigate the suffering. The Chief Minister, the Health Minister and the people’s representatives cutting party lines should come forward to impress the Prime Minister of the need to apportion the national cancer institute for Kochi,” said Dr N K Sanil Kumar, volunteer of Justice V R Krishna Iyer Movement which is spearheading the campaign for establishing KCRC as a full-fledged hospital cum research centre.
“In a year 2.25 lakh cancer patients visit Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, which include both new and old patients. This is a huge number and Kerala is having the highest number of female thyroid and breast cancer patients nationally. For people from across the state, Kochi is the most accessible location while RCC is already brimming at its seams. This is the right time to approach the PM,” Dr Sanil Kumar said.
