Chennai: Son attacks lawyer dad in Madras HC campus
However, the advocate in turn issued life threats to the family as a permanent fix to the problem.
Chennai: An estranged son hacked his father, a practicing advocate at the Madras High Court, when the latter was in his chamber in the Court premises, designated as a high-security zone, on Tuesday afternoon.
Clad in white shirt and black trousers, Rajesh (26), who sneaked into the campus, met his estranged father, Manimaran, in chamber No. 219 of the Additional Advocates Chambers near Esplanade Gate of the HC, over his sister’s marriage, at around 1.15 pm.
At around 1.30 pm, a wordy altercation broke out among the duo, which culminated with the advocate being hacked, and the injured ran out of the room to save himself from his son’s ire. Advocate NS Ramesh Durai, who was sitting in an adjoining chamber, came to Manimaran’s rescue and Rajesh threatened to hack him as well for intervening.
Since it was lunch hour, the noise attracted the attention of fellow advocates who got together against the assailant. The group of advocates caught hold of Rajesh within the campus and gave him a sound thrashing with whatever furniture they could lay their hands on inside the campus. A few advocates tried to pacify the angry mob to spare the youth’s life and subsequently cops came to the youth’s rescue.
“We saw him bleeding profusely. We moved him to the dispensary on the HC campus. The youth was later moved to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) for further treatment,” said advocate Ravichandran. Police said Manimaran has sustained three cut wounds and that his condition is stable. Meanwhile, Rajesh was moved to Government Stanley Hospital to tend to his injuries. How Rajesh got in is being questioned since he could sneak into the campus with a weapon undetected.
The court complex is considered to be a high security zone which is under CISF cover. In the past, the campus has witnessed large scale violence as in 2009.
No security lapse
City police maintained that there was no security lapse, and Rajesh was brought into the court complex through ADR Gate which was used by the advocates.
Rajesh, a B.Com graduate, is working in a B.P.O.
The prospective grooms to Rajesh's elder sister Anushuya were not ready to take it forward since their father was estranged. The family approached the advocate to make amends to his ways, and fix his daughter's marriage.
However, the advocate in turn issued life threats to the family as a permanent fix to the problem. Subsequently, the family had approached Vijayakumar to arbitrate the issue during which Rajesh resorted to hacking.
