Prices of a few vegetables rise in Hyderabad
Additional director, marketing, G. Lakshmi Bai said the prices of only a few vegetables had risen, and the remaining were stable.
Hyderabad: With demand rising for essential vegetables like brinjal, cluster beans, French beans, field beans and carrot for annadanam programmes during the Ganesh festivities, the prices of these vegetables have risen rapidly.
Mehdipatnam Rythu Bazaar estate officer K.R. Vijay Kumar said “the increased demand is the main cause behind rise of prices apart from recent rains and transportation problems.”
Mr K. Sekhar Goud, a farmer from Shabad of Ranga Reddy district, who cultivates carrot, tomato and brinjal, said, “We do not harvest vegetables when it rains because while cutting vegetables like brinjal and lady’s finger during or after rain, workers get injured by the thorny plants. We face losses if we pull carrot or beet root from the wet soil. Due to these reasons, we are not bringing in vegetables.”
Besides, the transport department has started engaging lorries and trolleys for Ganesh immersions, leaving farmers without any means to bring in vegetables.
