AP Governor Applauds Andhra Pradesh's Model Prison System
VISAKHAPATNAM: AP Governor Abdul Nazeer on Tuesday underlined that the prison system in Andhra Pradesh can serve as a role model for other states across the nation.
Addressing the valedictory function at the 8th National Conference on Prisons and Correctional Services, he pointed to practices in Andhra Pradesh, such as the introduction of virtual court appearances for inmates, the provision of corporate medical facilities for them, and skill development programmes for incarcerated individuals.
Heads of prisons from all states and union territories participated in the national conference in Visakhapatnam. The Governor pointed out that the introduction of virtual court appearances for inmates is a first in India.
Additionally, skill development has led to inmates' well-being. Abdul Nazeer stressed the urgency of prison reform in India, drawing wisdom from Fyodor Dostoevsky's insight that a society's prisons reflect its level of civilization.
He said he is happy that the conference is prioritising granting basic human rights to all prisoners and ensuring their safety and well-being.
The Governor appreciated the national conference for enabling constructive discussions on prison reforms in India. With the impending introduction of the Model Prisons Act, 2023, there is optimism that correctional administration will herald a brighter future, placing a strong emphasis on rehabilitation and the welfare of inmates, he added.
