Kaipurathupalam Jalolsavam to be held today
Almost all major boat clubs in Malabar have registered for the contest
KOZHIKODE: The members of eight residents associations in and around Kaipurathupalam in the city are all set to host a boat race to attract tourists. The event will be held Sunday afternoon in the presence of the representatives of the corporation and the city folks in the Kaipurathupalam backwaters. The organisers are residents of Puthur, Mokavoor West, Sangamam Mokavoor, Shreyas East Pavangad, Chaitanya Poorathara and Canoly.
“A year ago we planned such an event seeing a large number of tourists visiting the spot,” said its general convener, Udaya Kumar V. “Our aim is to develop this as a major tourist destination in Kozhikode with the help of District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). The DTPC has extended all their support for the boat race.” Almost all the major boat clubs in Malabar have registered for the competitions, he said, and 25 teams will be competing for the trophy.
“The event will be a boost for the region as a tourism destination. Since this backwater is vast and well maintained, it has the potential to host boat races and on a regular basis,” he said. The winners will get a cash prize of Rs 15,000 Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 for the first, second and third positions respectively.
