HYDERABAD: The second day of the three-day International Kite and Sweet Festival at Parade Ground drew crowds from across the country and the globe, as kite enthusiasts took part or took in the spectacle of flying coloured kites in the run-up to the main Sankranti festivities.

The festival ends on Monday. It opens at 10 and closes at 8 pm.

Fortythree enthusiasts from 16 countries, besides 60 from Indian states, took part in the events. Many were disappointed due to the slow wind for much of the day.

“We were geared up to fly kites amid strong winds… this breeze is a spoilsport,” said Rajeev Vaibhav, a participant.

Experienced hands found a way to lift off, with the sky soon a collage of multi-coloured square-shaped creations.

“It is incredible to fly my kite in such a beautiful city. The energy here is excellent and the cultural exchange is truly heartwarming,” said Maria, a Brazil native.

Michael, who was visiting from Los Angeles in the USA, was enthused by “the festive vibe of the place”.

Those who could not get their kites off the ground took solace in the wide array of sweets offered at stalls set up as part of the festivals. There were delicacies not only from various parts of the country, but also from the globe, as international stalls also drew many visitors.

In all, there were around 100 sweet stalls, and people holding cupcakes was a common sight.

The festival, which was not held since 2020 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, made a comeback in full force this year.
