Kochi abuzz with Vishu shopping
The high price of vegetables, fruits and other essential items have dampened the spirit of the festival celebrations.
Kochi: Despite the currency crunch and escalating price of essential goods, city residents are all set to celebrate the festival of Vishu. The city streets and city markets witnessed a heavy rush of customers. While vegetables and fruits were available in plenty, ‘Kanikonna’, the integral component of the Vishu kani ritual, was in short supply in most parts of the city. Synthetic kanikonna, priced at Rs 60 to 80, has many takers. The high price of vegetables, fruits and other essential items have dampened the spirit of the festival celebrations. Vegetable prices have skyrocketed ahead of Vishu and vegetables like cowpea and French beans were selling at more than Rs 100 per kg.
Ripe mango, kani vellari, (golden cucumber) – the vegetable of the season, jack fruit and banana were in high demand. “Due to price escalation, customers preferred to buy small quantities of goods,” said Shamsudeen M, a trader. Agriculture groups, Kudumbasree units, cooperative societies and self help groups have started organic vegetable expos and sales outlets for the Vishu festival days in many parts of the city.
Several shops have arranged special ‘vishu kani’ kits making it easier for the buyers. Wayside vendors from other states were seen selling idols of Sri Krishna, painted in golden and blue shades, at busy streets and junctions. Gold coins or coins of Rs 10 and Rs 5 which are gold coloured are in great demand to be gifted as ‘Vishukaineettam’. Vishu will be celebrated in major temples, especially in the Chottanikkara temple, where hundreds of devotees visit to view the vishu kani and vishu vilakku.
