Two women drown as boat capsizes in Owk reservoir

Kurnool: Two women drowned after a tourism boat carrying 12 people capsized at Owk reservoir in Nandyal district on Sunday. The deceased were identified as Ashabi, 28 and Noorjahan, 38.

All the remaining 10 people in the boat got saved as they were wearing life jackets. The boat reportedly capsized due to a leak. People nearby the reservoir pulled out all those wearing jackets to the bank. It would have been a tragedy if the passengers were not provided the safety gear, the police said.

The boat, operated by the tourism department, was in the middle of the water body when it began to sink, and those not wearing life jackets began drifting away in the water.

Officials of the police, revenue and other departments are involved in the rescue operations and efforts are on to trace the missing bodies. Those rescued were shifted to Kurnool and Banaganapalle hospitals for treatment.
