Ukraine Seeks India's Participation in Global Peace Summit
Andriy Yermak briefs Ajit Kumar Doval in detail on the current situation on the frontline
New Delhi: Ukraine on Wednesday announced that its Presidential Office Head Andriy Yermak had spoken to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval to seek India’s participation in a Global Peace Summit being organised by Ukraine for implementation of the Ukranian Peace Formula.
Ukraine said the conversation focused on “the consolidation of international support for the Ukrainian peace plan and the possibility of India joining the implementation of its individual points”. This follows the meeting last month between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Hiroshima on the sidelines of the G7 Summit therev where both leaders had been invited as guests.
Following the conversation that took place around midnight on Wednesday (IST), Yermak tweeted, “Following the implementation of the agreements reached by @ZelenskyyUa as a result of negotiations with Prime Minister of India @narendramodi, had a telephone conversation with National Security Adviser to Prime Minister of India Ajit Kumar Doval. The main topic of the conversation was the implementation of the Ukraine peace formula, in particular the consolidation of international support of India for the peace plan and the possibility of India joining the implementation of its individual points.”
It may be recalled that in his bilateral meeting with the Ukranian President at Hiroshima, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had conveyed that he understood the suffering of the Ukranian people and that India would do whatever it can to bring an end to the Ukraine conflict and help the Ukranian people. Modi had also assured that he would personally make all efforts in this direction and that for him, this was “not a political or economic issue but an issue of humanity, of human values”, while conveying “India’s clear support for dialogue and diplomacy to find a way forward”.
The Ukranian President had then briefed Modi on the current situation in his war-torn nation. The two leaders had met in-person after one and a half years and had last met before that on the sidelines of the COP26 Summit in UK’s Glasgow city in November, 2021. But it was their first bilateral meeting since the start of the Ukraine conflict in February last year when Russia launched its military offensive in its neighbouring nation.
In a statement on Wednesday, Ukraine said, “In order to coordinate the implementation of the agreements reached by Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his participation in the G7 Summit held in Japan on May 20, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak had a phone call with National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of India Ajit Doval. The main topic of the conversation was the implementation of the Ukrainian Peace Formula, in particular, the consolidation of international support for the Ukrainian peace plan and the possibility of India joining the implementation of its individual points.”
Ukraine added, “In this context, the parties discussed preparations for the Global Peace Summit. Andriy Yermak emphasised the need to involve the widest possible range of countries, including the Global South, in this event. ‘Recent events have once again proved that the Ukrainian Peace Formula is more relevant than ever - for both Ukraine and the whole world. We are actively working with partners to prepare the Global Summit on the implementation of the formula. We expect India to take part in it,’ the Head of the Presidential Office was quoted as stating.”
Ukraine further stated, “Andriy Yermak briefed Ajit Kumar Doval in detail on the current situation on the frontline, as well as on Russia's ongoing missile and drone terror against peaceful Ukrainian cities and civilians. The Head of the President's Office drew attention to the catastrophic environmental and humanitarian consequences of the act of terrorism committed by the Russian Federation at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant and called on India to join the international community in its efforts to eliminate the consequences of this man-made disaster.”
